Oasis Day Camp - How to Choose the Right Oasis Summer Camp Program for Your Child

< back to blog home

For over 20 years, the Oasis summer camp staff has produced developmentally appropriate programs that adapt to the needs of campers as they grow up. To help you figure out which program is right for your child, we offer five different options at all of our summer day camps, for kids ages three through 15.

Early Start Imagination Camp

Our Early Start Imagination Camp is a unique program for children between three and five years old who are fully potty-trained. The program is designed by early childhood educators to meet the social, emotional and physical needs of pre-K and kindergarten kids.

Campers in this program are experiencing many firsts: first time away from home, first time learning to swim, and first time riding a bus (to name a few). The Oasis staff strives to create a nurturing transition into the camp environment for children and parents, so we have a counselor to camper ratio of 1:3. Our supportive counselors make sure all the kids feel welcome and safe.

Children in Early Start Imagination Camp get the full Oasis summer camp experience but with extra one-on-one instruction and age appropriate activities. Early Start campers participate in arts and crafts, sports, and games modified for their age and specific development needs. Campers also participate in music and dance programs led by our experienced instructors, and play in the open grass areas at all of our summer day camps.

Lower Camp

Lower Camp is comprised of children going into first and second grades. Although these campers have a full day of activities, they’re still little kids, and need structure and exposure to a variety of activities modified to meet their needs. To ensure that each child gets one-on-one attention from our caring team, we also have a low counselor to camper ratio in Lower Camp.

There’s never a dull moment at any Oasis summer camp, and we provide just the right mix of learning, recreation and guidance for kids in Lower Camp. All campers can participate in our American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim program or hone their swimming skills under the direction of instructors and lifeguards. Our counselors ensure the kids have plenty of water breaks and that sunscreen is applied regularly.

Athletics are a big part of summer day camps and we offer expert coaching for sports including soccer, basketball, and softball (tennis is offered at select locations). If your child hasn’t played one of these sports, no worries. Our coaches provide plenty of instruction, and stress fun and fair sportsmanship above anything else

Our creative and performing arts programs is where the kids can let their imaginations run wild. Each Oasis day camp offers a variety of programming including music, dance, arts and crafts, and theater lead by our expert instructors. All activities are designed at a skill level appropriate for each age group.

Upper Camp

Campers going into third through sixth grades attend Upper Camp, and programming is adapted to meet the needs of campers as they get older. The Oasis summer camp staff pays special attention to ensure that activities are fun and aspirational so kids try new things and have an exciting camp experience.

Upper Camp includes all of the camp activities that kids love, but are diverse enough to engage campers as they grow up. Kids in Upper Camp also get to choose “Choice Time” activities from a daily/weekly menu of options. These vary by camp but include a variety of athletic, adventure-oriented, performing or creative arts electives such as volleyball, painting, chess, or a music clinic.

All of our summer day camps also have special “Late Nights” where kids in Upper Camp stay at camp once the official day has ended. Activities vary per week and can include barbeques, extra swimming sessions and movies. Our LIU Post and Dobbs Ferry camps also offer a Junior Teen Travel program for kids to try going on one or two local trips during the week (a precursor to Teen Travel).

Teen Travel

Our Teen Travel program is a favorite for kids going into seventh through ninth grades because it’s an opportunity to go on unique day trips and overnight adventures while forming lifelong friendships. Day trips, extended day trips and overnights are organized around a weekly theme, and teens can choose what interests them the most and sign up by the week.

Our dedicated Oasis summer camp counselors play a big role in making this program so much fun because they participate in all the activities with the kids. Trips could be a day at an amusement park or going white water rafting, enjoying an exhilarating zip line or riding go karts, going to a Mets game or the Museum of Modern Art, or road-tripping to Philadelphia or D.C.

Teen Travel campers get a chance to discover new places, try new things without judgment, and meet new people. The kids and counselors create a welcoming, friendly community where they make memories that last a lifetime. As many of our campers have told us – “it’s way better than sitting in my room playing video games!”

Counselor-in-Training (C.I.T.) Program

Being a camp counselor is an experience of a lifetime and many of the Oasis summer campcounselors started out as campers at our summer day camps. We created the Counselor-in-Training (C.I.T) Program for energetic and motivated teenagers in ninth through 11th grades who want to make the transition from camper to counselor.

The C.I.T. program gives kids the opportunity to have a job where they develop leadership and problem-solving skills while getting to enjoy the fun activities and friendships of summer camp. Our counselors get to share what they love most about Oasis summer camp with our younger campers while creating strong bonds and new friendships. It’s the most rewarding job they’ll ever have.
