OASIS SUMMER JOB DESCRIPTIONS

Oasis has a variety of positions available, including: Leadership Staff - Program Instructors - Swimming Instructors - Group Leaders - Administrative Staff. Each position plays an important role in enriching the lives of children.

GROUP LEADER POSITIONS:

Group Leader
Be more than just a counselor this summer!

  • Responsible for a group of 15 to 20 children on a daily basis
  • Ensure children's safety, manage children's behavior and act as a role model and mentor
  • Model constructive participation in all daily activities
  • Work closely with Division Leader to ensure safety of all children

Position Requirements: Group Leaders must be at least 17 years of age. All Group Leaders must participate in four days of training before camp begins.

INSTRUCTOR POSITIONS:

Sports, Recreation and Outdoor Education Instructors:

  • Develop age appropriate activities that keep children active and help them develop skills, teamwork and sportsmanship
  • Use group management skills to engage all children in daily activities

Some sports and recreation instructors specialize in specific activities such as soccer, outdoor education, basketball or tennis. Others will lead a variety of activities such as ultimate Frisbee, flag football, rugby and lacrosse.

Position Requirements: Sports instructors must be at least of college age and have experience organizing relevant activities. Instructors must participate in instructor-based training and four days of all staff training before camp begins.

Visual and Performing Arts Instructors

  • Plan activities that give children the opportunity to express themselves creatively
  • Facilitate activities that give children a sense of accomplishment that comes from mastering techniques and completing projects
  • Use group management skills to engage all children in daily activities

Oasis programs include drama, dance, arts and crafts, music, sculpture and more.

Position Requirements: Arts instructors must have some previous teaching experience and/or expertise. Instructors must participate in instructor-based training and four days of all-staff training before camp begins.

Swim Instructors

  • Teach the American Red Cross Swimming Program
  • Work directly with children of all swim levels on a daily basis
  • Assist with all waterfront activities as assigned, including lifeguard duties
  • Help develop and implement swim lessons geared to the ages, interests and abilities of campers
  • Monitor safety of children and staff in pool changing areas

Position Requirements: Swim Instructors should be certified lifeguards and should have current certification in CPR. Oasis offers lifeguard certification at no charge for, but it requires completion of the certification course before the summer. Interested applicants should contact Oasis headquarters. All instructors must participate in four days of training before camp begins as well as pre-camp trainings in their concentrated areas.

LEADERSHIP POSITIONS:

Division Leader

  • Supervise as many as 12 staff members and up to 75 children on a daily basis
  • Teach young staff to foster positive youth development
  • Work closely with parents and families
  • Model program participation and appropriate interaction with children
  • Coordinate staff training
  • Enhance leadership skills and build your resume

Typically, Division Leaders have backgrounds in teaching, social work, psychology or youth development.

Position Requirements: Eligible candidates should have a master's degree and/or previous leadership experience in youth development programs. The Division Leader position requires participation in a series of pre-camp training sessions in the late spring and facilitating four days of all-staff training before camp begins.

Program Director

  • Supervise as many as 15 instructors
  • Create and Manage overall program content and design
  • Oversee budget, purchasing and instructor development
  • Create and update the daily schedule along with special events and rainy days
  • Evaluate quality of instruction and activities
  • Coach instructors on appropriate group behavior management strategies
  • Work closely with Leadership team to insure camper safety in all activities

Typically, Program Directors have backgrounds in teaching, educational leadership or youth development.

Position Requirements: Program Directors must have experience managing staff and creating age appropriate lesson plans in a wide range of instructional areas such as physical education, art, theatre and academic enrichment. The Program Director position requires participation in a series of pre-camp training sessions in the late spring and facilitating four days of all-staff training before camp begins.

Operations Director

  • Supervise as many as 5 staff members and monitor over 100 staff members
  • Act as a liaison between children and families
  • Oversee all on-site financial operations and budgets
  • Manage information systems including systems for purchasing, delivering and storing supplies.
  • Supervise payroll
  • Coordinate transportation
  • Manage pre-program site preparation and post-program site closure

Typically, Operations Directors have backgrounds in management or youth development. Many Operations Directors are graduate students in public policy or business.

Position Requirements: Operations Directors participate in a great deal of training before the summer and should be prepared to start working 3-4 weeks before camp begins. The Operations Director must be able to maintain order in a busy environment. Eligible candidates must have a valid driver's license. The Operations Director position requires participation in a series of pre-camp training sessions in the late spring and facilitating four days of all-staff training before camp begins.

Health Director

  • Oversee all medical issues and emergencies that occur on site
  • Manage all documentation relating to all medical occurrences
  • Work closely with campers, staff and families on a daily basis
  • Follow all Department of Health rules and regulations
  • Create safety systems throughout the site to prevent illness and injury
  • Manage all medical supplies
  • Dispense medication and keep related records

Position Requirements: Health Directors are certified Nurses, EMT's, Medical Students or Paramedics. Health Directors must be NYS or NJ licensed Emergency Medical Technician, RN or LPN. In addition, Health Directors should have a current certificate in Responding to Emergency first aid issued by the American Red Cross and must have successfully completed a CPR course within the past year.

Swim Director

  • Execute a safe, high quality instructional swim program
  • Oversee swim staff
  • Ensure compliance with all rules and regulations of the Department of Health, American Camp Association and the American Red Cross
  • Evaluate camper swim levels
  • Implement systems to ensure safety of all persons at the pool
  • Foster relationships with Non-Oasis pool management and supervisors

Position Requirements: Swim Directors must be at least 21 years of age, have 3 seasons of previous waterfront experience as a lifeguard and/or camp pool director and possess a current Water Safety Instructors Certificate (r.09) from the American Red Cross, YMCA or other recognized training programs. The Swim Director position requires participation in a series of pre-camp training sessions in the late spring and four days of all-staff training before camp begins.

Interventionist

  • Work one-on-one with children who are having difficulty participating in the program
  • Serve as liaison with parents
  • Help children and staff resolve conflicts appropriately.
  • Intervene if children are having significant behavior issues.
  • Coach other staff members in behavior management and managing groups

Position Requirements: Interventionists must have formal training in Social Work or Psychology and have previous experience working with children and/or young adults. The Interventionist position requires participation in a series of pre-camp training sessions in the late spring and four days of all-staff training before camp begins.

SUPPORT STAFF POSITIONS:

Administrative Staff

  • Communicate with parents, campers and staff on a daily basis
  • Assist with data entry, ordering supplies, attendance, bus routes and other tasks
  • Work closely with the Operations Director and Program Director

Position Requirements: The Administrative staff position requires participation in four days of all-staff training before camp begins.

Maintenance/Support Staff

  • Keep site clean, safe and functioning
  • Set up equipment, water stations, coolers and keep all camp spaces well maintained
  • It is preferred that candidates for this position have a valid driver's license
