Oasis is far more enriching than and ordinary summer camp experience. Members of the Oasis team work with children in a fun, outdoor environment and have the opportunity to develop professional expertise in areas ranging from education to management. In fact, college students can earn up to three college credits for their participation in the Oasis Professional Development Program.
All members of the Oasis team participate in an ongoing summer course named Leadership Skills in Community Youth Recreation. The learning experience emphasizes: proper supervision of campers; active listening skills; components of a well run activity; strategies for dealing with children; developing capable campers; identifying child abuse and neglect; disciplining with dignity; the function of play; sports and young children, and risk management. The course takes place during the three-day Oasis orientation and during weekly, one-hour meetings. There is a small amount of outside reading and you'll be asked to keep a journal. We will supply all course materials. If you intend to apply for college credit, you'll also have to take a final exam.
